Echoes from the past, visions for the future

- Nordic freelancers seminar in Åland, June 5th – June 7th 2009 -

Åland, independent and self-governing just like freelancers, welcomes us on Friday June 5th.

Location: Käringsund, Eckerö 5.-7-6. 2009

The seminar fee:
The fee includes all meals, local transportation, accommodation and the program.
• 240 €, accommodation in bungalows, double room
• 300 €, single room

NORDIC FREELANCERS SEMINAR IN ECKERÖ, ÅLAND 5th - 7th June, 2009


Welcome to the Nordic freelancers seminar in Eckerö, 5th - 7th June, 2009!


• Bus transport from the harbor to the Åland Parliament has been organized at 14:30 on Friday 5th for those arriving to the seminar via Stockholm and Turku. At the Åland Parliament, there are local politicians meeting us.
If you'd like to arrange interviews in advance, please send e-mail to yhdistys@freet.fi.

• Please register in advance to the workshops held on Saturday. Make sure you register well in advance, as the amount of participants in workshop is limited. Please remember that if you'd like to attend the video clip workshop, you need to have your own video camera with you. Tell us your first and secondary choice, in case some of the groups are too popular.

• Please contact us at yhdistys@freet.fi, if you have allergies or you are on a special diet. We are still waiting some of you to decide between single and double room. Please do it asap!

• Would you like to bring your own radio or TV-documentary or -program to seminar for your fellow freelancers to look at? At the seminar, there's a space where the programs can run non-stop. You can present your own work and leave it to be shown for others. Let us know what you've got beforehand at yhdistys@freet.fi.



Friday 5th June

15:00 Visit to the local Parliament house: meeting the local politicians, we'll get introduced to the Provincial Local Government of Åland and get a glimpse of the autonomy and history of Åland. Hosted by Åland Landskapsregering.

17:00 Bus ride to fortress of Bomarsund with more information of Åland, a light snack

19:30 Arriving at Käringsund

20:00 Dinner, during which we'll hear about the wonders of the media of Åland

21:30 Traditional Bränball game & meeting old friends .

22:00 Late night sauna


Saturday 6th June

Freelancers and the Union – union´s and the freelancers' challenges, threats and future?

9:30-10:00 Swan song of the author´s rights – Case Finland, freelance journalist Heikki Jokinen from the Freelance-journalists in Finland and ombudsman Petri Savolainen from the Union of Journalists in Finland

10:00 – 10:45 What does the future promise for freelancers in media companies: what are the freelancers needed for? How does the subcontracting will affect journalistic work? What do we need to know and do to cope?
Hosted by journalist Kirsi Crowley, discussing director Roope Lehtinen (Moskito TV), professor Maija Töyry (The University of Art and Design Helsinki), editor-in-chief Leeni Peltonen (Yhtyneet Kuvalehdet).

11:30 – 12:30 One region, many cultures – actress and journalist Anna-Kristiina Juuso, film director Klaus Härö, hosted by journalist Magnus Londen

a) 15:15-18:30 Panu Räty: Asking the right Questions, Workshop on interviewing

b) 15:15-18:45 Anton Hyökki: Workshop (for photographers) on the key points of making a basic journalistic video.
- a brief overview on equipment and workflow (presentation)
- interview filming exercise (workshop – video camera required)
- capturing and editing with Adobe Premiere Pro (presentation)
- publishing your work on YouTube (presentation)
After the lecture students are able to edit their video from the material they have filmed during the lecture.

c) 15:15-18:00 Environmental journalism : whose voice is ) heard in environmental journalism, what kind of know-how is needed for the for environmental journalism?
Introducing into the subject: Hannes Mäntyranta (Finnish Forest Association), Eija Järvinen (”Environment” magazine), Jussi Laitinen (freelancer specializing on environmental issues), Lauri Myllyvirta (Greenpeace), Jukka Nurminen (photographer). Hosted by Ismo Tuormaa, 30 years for environmental journalism

d) 15:15-18:00 Professor of Magazine Journalism, Maija Töyry: How to open up a magazine concept, how to make your story ideas suit the customer's needs?

e) 15:15-16:16 Film director Klaus Härö: Art of Storytelling. What can we journalists learn from moviemaking?

Afternoon coffee is enjoyed during the workshops.

17:30 Sauna/Leisurely aperitif walk to the Eckerö post and customs house, guided by local vicar Mårten Andersson

21:00 Dinner presented by the Strömsö celebrity chef Mikael Björklund

9:00-9:45 Does the media turn losers into super celebrities: what kind of responsibility do we as journalists have for the school shootings? Pekka Hyvärinen from The Council for Mass Media, media researchers and journalists who were on the spot in Kauhajoki and Jokela school-shootings in Finland.

10:00-11:30 Economist Arto Suninen: Economics, media and subcontracting work: how are the media companies doing and how does the economic downturn effect freelancing?

11:30-12:00 Magnus Londen: Welcome to Finland

12:00 Lunch

13:00 Home journey starts with a bus taking us to the harbor
