Freelance division: what is it?

The freelancer division is a branch of the Union of Journalists in Finland.

Consisting of free journalists it had about 900 members, writing mainly for papers and magazines, at the end of 2003.

There are people from different medias such as photographers, writing journalists, filmers and translators, not forgetting tv- and radio journalists. During the last few years the division has also attracted Internet experts.

The freelance division drives its members´s interests by informing
about timely work related issues, taking part in debates concerning the field´s development and by educating it´s members. The
division´s mission is to improve the working environment, financial
situation and social care of its members. The members are not included in the unemployment fund and as entrepreneurs they have to look after their pensions and sickness or unemployment protection.

Freelance division gives 25.000 euros worth of Jokes stipends(Foundation for improving journalistic culture) yearly to educate its members. With the division´s own training one gets information from tax counselling to stress control and making home pages. The courses are mainly free of charge.

Freelance division publishes its own paper called Freelancer news once a year. FreeOnline is a busy and well used bulleting board and a
channel for discussion.
